My background
I try really hard to hide my accent. I grew up in Kentucky; then after college, I moved to Tennessee. I've been in the Nashville area since 2011.
I've always been interested in computers. I started coding as a hobby in 2000 (with QBASIC) and professionally in 2009 (with .NET).
I took the (boring) traditional career path. I went to college for computer science and got my B.Sc. before I started working full-time.
Jack of many trades. My work history ranges from startups to Fortune 100, agriculture to healthcare to finance, and mobile to back-end to web.
What guides me
Life's too short not to have fun. I'm professional in my work, but I try not to take myself too seriously otherwise.
Being kind is free. Everyone I work with is a human trying their best, just like me. We all deserve kindness and grace. Sometimes this means giving important feedback (with care), even if it's difficult.
Learn things; help people; repeat. I love discovering new things, but using what I know to make other people's lives better is what really fulfills me.
Work to live, not the other way around. I give a full effort, but at the end of the day, I work so that I can enjoy a comfortable life outside the office.
Let's talk about ...
Food. I love cooking and baking, mostly because I love eating. Some of my favorite things I've made include fudge, marshmallows, bagels, and pizza, but I'll try just about anything.
Why people do what they do. People are such fascinating and complex creatures. What guides our decisions? Where do we get our beliefs? How do we get ourselves into (and out of) so many situations?
Random trivia. If it's completely useless to know, it'll get stuck in my head. I don't know why, but that's the way it is.
Computer stuff. I don't code much outside work, but I do still have what some might call an obsession with computers. Ask me about my rack-mounted home server and networking hardware.
Anime and manga. I love a good story! And Japanese media has so many. A short selection of faves: Death Note, Fairy Tail, Bloom Into You, and Howl's Moving Castle.
My commitments to you
I take my commitments very, very seriously. I try really hard to be reliable, which means I only commit to what I intend to deliver. This means sometimes I'll tell you I can't promise something; but, if I do make a promise, I'll keep you informed and hold myself accountable.
You can contact me any time, even if I'm unavailable. We live in a world where remote work is a thing. Some you might need to tell me something when I'm not around, and that's okay! I may not always see your message immediately, but I'll respond when I can. In an emergency, I'll try to respond ASAP no matter the time of day; for non-emergencies, I'll get back to you during my working hours.
I will do the very best I can with what I have. Constraints vary with every project, but I always strive for the highest quality in the given time, with the given tools. If I need to cut scope or ask for adjustments, it'll be a conversation, and I'll bring my concerns to you as early as I possibly can.
Care and feeding
Praise: I'm okay with people calling out when I do a good thing, as long as it's done calmly. I don't like drawing too much attention to myself, though, so asking me privately first is always appreciated.
Critique: I'm happy to share my own shortcomings publicly, but if you have constructive feedback for me, please message me privately before circulating it elsewhere. I promise to consider all feedback and take action as appropriate.
Stress: Watch for stammering -- when I'm stressed, I talk too fast and trip over my words. Ask me if I need a quick break or a snack to reset myself.
Diet: I'll eat very nearly anything that's safe to consume. Snacks may as well be a love language for me, especially if they're novel or interesting.
