Matt Gawarecki

Staff software engineer
(he/him)

Product engineer specializing in web-scale systems with React and TypeScript -- both building them from the ground up and taking existing ones to the next level. I take ideas from the whiteboard to millions in ARR, inspire high technical standards across teams, and consistently deliver on time in a way that stakeholders love.

Work experience

    Global
    • Senior Frontend Engineer

      -
      • Core engineer and technical lead for flagship AI site builder product; shipped to public beta in 9 months, GA 1 year later; now generates $5MM in ARR with 30% in-flow conversion and accounts for 25% of all new sites created
      • Ideated and built several patent-backed features like LLM-powered page generation, prompt analysis for better site generation, side-by-side page previews, and automatic font installation
      • Named inventor on two patents pending acceptance, originating from AI site builder development
      • Organically took on leadership responsibilities including standup facilitation, scope management, team project allocation, and representing engineering in stakeholder communications
      • Co-developed and piloted a new systems design interview question, personally conducting 25+ interviews to date and training several other interviewers
  • Automattic

    Global
    • Senior Software Engineer

      -
      • Facilitated, documented, and established a formal, team-developed code review standard
      • Built and shipped friendly and efficient experiences for agencies and hosting partners in a React/Redux/TypeScript web app to support self-serve management of up to hundreds of sites
      • Modernized our customer experience with completely new sidebar navigation in <1 month
    • Engineering Manager

      -
      • Led a global team of up to 7 engineers across three continents, from UTC-8 to UTC+8
      • Devised a task estimation system that consistently delivered projects within -3 to +1 days of ETA on 6-8 week initiatives
      • Coached and mentored senior engineers to career growth and domain expertise, in areas like project management, performance management, and web accessibility
      • Reclaimed hours of engineering time per week by replacing all recurring meetings with async communication.
      • Actively participated in division-level roadmap planning discussions
    • Senior Software Engineer

      -
      • Launched a completely new product offering to empower over 20 million Jetpack customers to back up their sites, scan for malware, and track site health from anywhere
      • Designed, executed, and analyzed A/B tests to study and improve jetpack.com's conversion rate
      • Regularly collaborated with design and product stakeholders to quickly iterate impactful projects

Patents

  • Machine learning assisted content generation using semantic hierarchy

    Filed ; published .

A method to generate all the content for a single web page using AI. Uses the page's existing semantic structure (e.g., headlines vs body text) to build context-aware prompts, then validates against placement-specific requirements (e.g., tone, length, complexity) before presenting to the user for revision or approval.

  • Semantically-structured webpage templates using generative machine learning models

    Filed ; published .

A system to generate entire websites with AI. Interprets a user's requirements via natural language or selections, retrieves relevant page templates and structural metadata using semantic similarity search, builds AI prompts to populate those templates with contextually-appropriate content (text, images, etc.), and validates output against the underlying schema. The system supports iterative refinement, multi-page generation, and feedback-driven learning across sessions.
